Paws & Effect Places Service Dogs in Black Mountain

Press release from Paws & Effect:

Paws & Effect, a Black Mountain-based service dog organization, is placing its first seizure alert and mobility service dog with a child who resides in Asheville, North Carolina. Placement of service dog River will occur at Christmount during the week of March 17, 2019. Additionally, three other service dogs will be placed that week in a combination of classroom and community experiences that will see new teams successfully integrated into public.

To support Paws & Effect’s service dog teams after their initial placement, the organization is making extensive efforts to offer water and wilderness experiences over the summer through Pivot Point WNC. With a Pop Up Putt Putt fundraiser at Salvage Station on April 13, 2019, service dog-friendly paddling and camping excursions will be made available to Paws & Effect’s service dog teams.

More than 100 successful service dog partnerships have been formed by Paws & Effect, emphasizing the success experienced by the organization in other ways:

  • recognition as the 2013 and 2014 winning charity partner in American Humane’s Hero Dog Awards for innovative programming;
  • support from the Iowa Order of the Eastern Stars charity beneficiary for 2014-15, benefitting from a very generous donation;
  • the 2013-2014 Drake University charity partner for their School of Journalism and Public Relations Capstone, providing a unique opportunity to formalize its marketing and business plans.
  • the 2013 Character Counts Organization of Character

Paws & Effect’s executive director, Nicole Shumate, was designated as a 40 Under 40 (Leaders to Watch) for her advocacy efforts within the service dog community and the community as a whole. Ms. Shumate’s past experiences lend themselves to Paws & Effect’s becoming a valuable and integrated part of the community.
