Poetry Cabaret returns to The Crow & Quill, Sept. 7 & 8

Now in its third year, Poetry Cabaret offers two nights of spoken word performance and live music. Shows are held Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 7 and 8, at The Crow & Quill.

Press release from event organizers:

Poetry Cabaret III throws down again—this year for two nights, September 7 and 8 at The Crow and Quill (106 N. Lexington Ave.) starting at 8:00 PM. The event features a phalanx of spoken word poets performing along with live music by Vendetta Crème, Aaron Price, and Charlie Rauh; and now with more burlesque. The head bartender, Casey Campfield, will be creating a special poetry-themed cocktail menu for the event. Please contact Caleb Beissert for further information. The public may contact The Crow and Quill at thecrowandquill@gmail.com, or visit the Facebook event page at: https://www.facebook.com/events/501772059975583/. The event is open to the public aged 21+, and for admission we request a $5-10 sliding scale donation to support the performers and crew. Cocktail hour begins at 7:00 P.M. each night with live cabaret music by Vendetta Crème.

The evening features a variety of noteworthy performers: Landon Godfrey, winner of the Cider Press Review Book Award and co-host of Vandercooked Poetry Nights; New York City based guitarist and composer Charlie Rauh of Cornelius Eady’s Rough Magic; Chicago poet Emilio Maldonado performing bilingual poetry in the Spanish and English; Ted Pope, Morganton, NC, native continuing the Black Mountain College influence and wild man author of rEdlipsticK (New Native Press, 2005); favorite Asheville duo Vendetta Crème performing authentic cabaret songs from the old days with a Dadaist edge; prolific local writer and Community Editor for The Laurel of Asheville Leah Shapiro; Caleb Beissert, organizer of Altamont Poetry Series and Poetry Open Mic at Noble Kava and translator of Beautiful (New Native Press, 2013); Asheville street poet with a voice of gold Kevin Evans; locally renowned musician and producer Aaron Price; and Poetry Slam Asheville Team 2011 poet and author of Observable Acts (Swimming with Elephants Press, 2015) Kevin Barger; Virgogray Press author, poet, comedian, and inner healer Justin Blackburn; word weaver, urban priestess, and bad ass mama Ekua Adisa, Melanie McGee Bianchi whose work has been published in Asheville Poetry Review, Mountain Xpress, Verve, WNC Magazine, and Bold Life; Vice President of the Thirsty Monk and Founding Producing Director of The Magnetic Theatre, Chall Gray; founder of the Traveling Bonfires and author of Red Is the Color of My Night (Loved by the Buffalo, 2014) Pasckie Pascua; local Argentinian tango group Los Abrojitos; and last, but certainly not least, award-winning burlesque performer and founder of the Burlesque Academy of Asheville, the girl with the derriere, Deb au Nare; The evenings will be compered by your own Caleb Beissert.

Poetry Cabaret III is next edition of an event put on in 2014 at The Crow and Quill and in 2012 at the Altamont Theatre, which featured David Hopes, Griffin Payne, Justin William Evans, James McKay from London, and the late Mike Cook among others, and was an underground smash success.

Poetry Cabaret offers a unique happening not yet seen in Asheville, or anywhere—a wild yet intelligent party thrown for the community to enjoy. The evening features an array of voices from different cultures and backgrounds. This exotic performance is two nights only and neither are to be missed.
