Public invited to provide input on Woodfin’s Riverside Park and Whitewater Wave

Press release from the town of Woodfin:

The public is being asked to weigh in on plans for the Woodfin Riverside Park and Whitewater Wave. The park’s expansion and renovation is a key part of a larger regional re-envisioning of the French Broad River that will revitalize the post-industrial waterfront into parks, miles of greenway and blueway access.

The existing Riverside Park will be expanded to incorporate the recently purchased Waste Pro Property. Plans for the larger park include a world-class whitewater feature located in the French Broad River. Other proposed features include environmental enhancements, a pavilion, restrooms, a greenway connecting to Asheville’s Wilma Dykeman Greenway and many other features.

The Town of Woodfin would like the public to provide input on what amenities are top priority for inclusion in the final design. This can be done by taking an online survey that can be accessed using the QR code or visiting www.tinyurl.com/WoodfinParks. Participation is not limited to Woodfin residents.

The next stage of more detailed design will commence once the survey closes on July 11. The Town of Woodfin has contracted with Equinox, a design firm based out of Asheville, and S20 Design, for design of the park and the wave, respectively. Construction is targeted to begin in the fall of 2022.

For more information contact Eric Hardy, Woodfin’s town administrator at 828-253-4887 or via email directly at ehardy@woodfin-nc.gov.

The Woodfin Greenway & Blueway project is an ambitious $18.7 million effort to construct five miles of greenway along the French Broad River and Beaverdam Creek. When fully complete in 2023, the project will provide new river access sites at Silver-Line Park, currently under construction, and an expanded Riverside Park. An exciting and much anticipated feature of the project will be the in-stream Whitewater Wave.

Project partners are Buncombe County Recreation Services and RiverLink. Major funding for the project comes from the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority, N.C. Departments of Transportation and Environmental Quality and Buncombe County. Visit Riverlink.org for Greenway and Blueway project updates.
