Carolina Public Press, Western North Carolina’s only nonprofit online news service devoted to unbiased, in-depth and investigative reporting and educational opportunities to journalists, students and others, announces its third year of trainings about understanding state and federal public records laws.
NONPROFIT DISCLOSURES, a new training program from Carolina Public Press, will focus specifically on the state’s large and influential nonprofit sector — including understanding what records and information nonprofit organizations must disclose and make public, according to local, state and federal laws and standards.
The workshop will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at the conference room at The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina in Asheville. Attendees may choose from morning or afternoon sessions (trainings will include the same information). The first will be held 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The second will be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m.
Working journalists, students, community members and nonprofit and agency leaders will find NONPROFIT DISCLOSURES a unique opportunity for high-quality, interactive and cost-effective training. Nonprofit leaders will learn about changes to North Carolina laws dictating what information must be made public — and how to comply with the law. Journalists, students and community members can learn how to obtain and how to analyze tax, financial and program-related information available on nonprofits across the state.
Trainers and speakers include regional and statewide experts from legal, media and nonprofit organizations. They include:
• Amanda Martin, attorney, N.C. Press Association
• David Heinen, vice president for advocacy and public policy, N.C. Center for Nonprofits
• Jon Elliston, investigations and open government editor, Carolina Public Press
• General admission is $35, and space is limited. Parking is free, and refreshments and materials will be provided.
