From Rainbow Community School:

RAINBOW COMMUNITY SCHOOL URGES YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN INTERNATIONAL SCREEN FREE WEEK AND ASHEVILLE’S OWN STRIVE NOT TO DRIVE WEEK

Asheville, North Carolina — Rainbow Community School (RCS) hopes to encourage other community members and local organizations to participate in Screen Free Week, Walk and Bike to School Day and Strive Not to Drive Week.

The mission statement of West Asheville’s neighborhood holistic school Rainbow Community School is to “develop accomplished, confident and creative learners who are prepared to be compassionate leaders in building a socially just, spiritually connected and environmentally sustainable world.” This is translated through curriculum, programming, and activities that permeate our culture. In addition, not only is spring time just a beautiful time to be out and about in Asheville it also yields many opportunities for our school to embrace the role of environmental steward. Earth Day celebrations, May Day activities, participation and promotion of national Screen Free Week, Walk and Bike to School Day and Asheville’s very own Strive not to Drive Week are among a few. When community members come together for events such as these, their collective energy can be an amazing impetus for change. These efforts can improve our quality of life by encouraging active, healthy lifestyles, stronger community connections, and can even lead to improved community programs and policy changes.

Screen-Free Week is an annual, international celebration when families, schools, and communities swap digital entertainment for the joys of life beyond the screen” (http://www.screenfree.org) On May 1-7, RCS families will join in the international event by pledging to unplug from various forms of digital entertainment and engage with books, games, time outside and connecting with friends and families. They invite you to pledge too!

The National Center for Safe Routes to School has organized a Walk and Bike to School day on May 10. The organization is “committed to empowering communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe, appealing, preferred choice for families” (http://www.walkbiketoschool.org) Please join RCS and thousands of other people nationwide on this day! In fact, RCS has four staff members and several students who ride or walk to school every day of the school year!

Strive Not to Drive began in 1991 and enthusiasm for it continues to grow as community members of Asheville and Buncombe county strive to” raise awareness about how our transportation choices affect our health, air quality and quality of like….” (http://www.strivenottodrive.org). During the week of May 12-17, RCS invites to join its families as they walk, bike, carpool and use public transit, and bike to school. RCS will also be hosting a commuter station at the entrance of the RCS campus at 574 Haywood Rd. from 8:00-9:00 a.m. RCS will provide coffee, fruit and snacks to fuel your commute.
