Resources for environmental action

Press release:

The WESTERN NC ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION DIRECTORY: Resources and Action Opportunities For Achieving a Sustainable Future in Our Rural Mountain Communities was hot off the presses in time for Earth Day festivities, and is now available to one and all across the region.  Noting increasing concerns about the health and preservation of our precious mountains and the wealth of natural resources they support, Kokopelli’s Daughters, a community service enterprise in Micaville, decided to update and re-publish the Community Action Directory it assembled as a fundraiser for Madison County’s Laurel Valley Watch back in 2006, with emphasis on environmental concerns.

“The current political landscape is making many people nervous about the future of hard-won environmental protections, especially here in our fragile mountain region,” remarks Dr. Deborah Louis, coordinator of the project.  “Many of our friends and neighbors want to do something proactive to make sure that what progress we’ve made remains in place, and that we continue to move forward from here.”

With URLs and contact information for 43 action and advocacy organizations and 14 green businesses in Western North Carolina, plus a comprehensive reading list for anyone new to environmental action, this little pocket booklet will prove an indispensable resource for anyone concerned about the health and sustainability of our mountain habitat. Individual copies are @$5 or 5/$20, available at Rocks and Things on Spruce Pine’s Upper Street, the OOAK Art Gallery on the Micaville Loop, or email deb@northmountains.org to arrange individual or bulk purchases.
