Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Kay Hagan announced today that vital financial support is coming to North Carolina to tackle the homeless veterans crisis. Organizations across the state will receive nearly $6 million in homeless prevention grants to serve nearly 2,400 North Carolina homeless or at-risk veteran families. Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry will receive $737,000 to serve approximately 300 participant households in 26 counties in western North Carolina.
“North Carolina is the most military-friendly state in the country, and I’m committed to ensuring that we do everything we can to support our servicemembers when they return home,” said Hagan, Chair of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats. “Veterans account for 13 percent of the nation’s homeless population, and these grant awards will help us get our veterans back on their feet during tough times.”
The funds are distributed through the Veterans Affairs Department’s Support Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. The SSVF program aims to improve housing stability for low-income veteran families living in or transitioning to permanent housing. Nearly 90 percent of the veterans who completed the program in 2012 transitioned to permanent housing.
Grants will be distributed to private, non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives that can provide a range of support services such as outreach, case management and assistance in obtaining VA benefits.
The following organizations in North Carolina have been selected for SSVF grant awards in 2013:
· Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry in Asheville, NC: $737,000 to serve approximately 300 participant households in 26 counties in western North Carolina.
· United Way of Forsyth County, Inc. in Winston-Salem, NC: $820,720 to serve approximately 200 participant households in Forsyth County.
· Family Endeavors: $2,000,000 to serve approximately 1,400 participant households in Charlotte, Jackson and Fayetteville Counties.
· Community Link Programs of Travelers Aid Society of Central Carolinas, Inc. in Charlotte, NC: $1,141,144 to serve approximately 175 participant households in Cabarrus, Catawba, Davidson, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly, and Union Counties.
· Volunteers of America of The Carolinas, Inc. in Blythewood, SC: $1,007,000 to serve approximately 250 participant households in Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Johnson, Lee, Person, Orange, Randolph, Rockingham, and Wake Counties.
· Passage Home Inc. in Raleigh, NC: $289,075 to serve approximately 60 participant households in Wake County.Senator Hagan hails from a strong military family – her father-in-law was a two-star Marine General; her brother and father served in the Navy; her husband, Chip, is a Vietnam Veteran who used the GI Bill to help pay for law school; and she has two nephews who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
