Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars performs free show for LEAF Schools & Streets, May 12

LEAF Festival and LEAF Schools & Streets invite the community to an Educational “Informance” by Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars at The Orange Peel at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 12th, 2014. The show will include a performance presenting the band’s spirited fusion of traditional West African music, roots reggae and classic rhythm and blues. The one hour “Informance” will include a question and answer session where the audience will interact directly with the band and learn.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars was formed by a group of refugee musicians displaced to Guinea during the Sierra Leone Civil War. The band is an inspiring example of the redeeming power of music. Since their return to Sierra Leone in 2004, they have toured extensively to raise awareness for humanitarian causes and have performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. The story is depicted in the 2005 documentary film “Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars”.

This “Informance” is an educational opportunity for school field trips, homeschoolers, and all kids in middle and high school. It is an excellent opportunity for students to experience music and culture while learning a great deal directly from the band members about their experiences, West African history, and their optimism and hope in the face of adversity. LEAF Schools & Streets has created curriculum for middle and high school teachers to supplement this “Informance” in order to make it an enriching experience for all of those involved. The curriculum is aligned with the North Carolina Core and Essential Standards for Education. Please visit http://www.theleaf.org/index.php/schoolsstreets/programs to download the curriculum.
