Sleepworld Asheville hosts blanket drive Dec. 5-10

From ABCCM:

Sleepworld Asheville is Blanketing Buncombe for ABCCM

ASHEVILLE – Sleepworld Asheville, one of the city’s leading mattress retailers, is partnering with Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) to make sure no Buncombe County resident is cold this winter.

Sleepworld Asheville is hosting the Blanketing Buncombe blanket drive from Monday, Dec. 5 to Saturday, Dec. 10. Blankets and donations of other winter-weather items such as coats, gloves, scarves, hats and boots, can be dropped off at Sleepworld Asheville’s location at 700 Hendersonville Road. Sleepworld Asheville is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The phone number is (828) 333-9310.

Last year ABCCM distributed more than 1,000 blankets through its four Crisis Ministry locations, along with blankets that are given out at the Veterans Restoration Quarters (VRQ), which houses 250 homeless male veterans along with men who stay night-to-night for overnight shelter, and Steadfast House, which houses 43 women, including female veterans, and children, along with women in overnight shelter. ABCCM also distributes blankets to men and women who choose to remain on the street in cold weather months.

Although ABCCM distributes many blankets in the colder weather, blankets are a year-round need for men, women and families who are receiving assistance through the Crisis Ministry, or moving out of the VRQ or Steadfast House into their own homes or apartments.

ABCCM’s four Crisis Ministry centers help low-income Buncombe County families who are facing financial emergencies and are living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to meet life’s basic needs. The Crisis Ministry provides them with food boxes, gently used clothing, and utility and rental assistance.

Sleepworld Asheville has been serving Asheville for 20 years and specializes the largest selection in Asheville of natural, organic and luxury latex mattresses including Beautyrest, Posh + Lavish, Mlily, SavvyRest, Kingsdown, iComfort, Talalay, Eco and Leggett & Platt. Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM) is one of the key nonprofit organizations addressing poverty, hunger, homelessness and access to health care for the under-served in Buncombe County, serving around 50,000 individuals each year. Begun as a small collaboration of churches in 1969, ABCCM has played a significant role in meeting emergency assistance needs for families in crisis, coordinating religious services and education activities at the jail, providing transitional and permanent supportive housing of the homeless through 300 beds, increasing access to health care for half the uninsured and medically underserved; as well as work readiness, mentoring and job placement services. We serve veterans across 26 WNC counties. ABCCM is generously supported by 279 congregations of all denominations and faith groups; plus more than 6,000 trained volunteers and provides emergency assistance to anyone in need regardless of age, sex, religion or ethnic background.
