Smokemont hike to support trail work in the Smokies on Aug. 14

Take in the sights and sounds of an Appalachian creek at at the Aug. 14 Classic Hike of the Smokies Classic Hike of the Smokies. This guided hike follows an old roadbed from Smokemont Campground to Backcountry Campsite #49, paralleling Bradley Fork along the way.  The group will cover 9.8 miles with an 800-foot ascent, and see old growth trees along the way.

Western North Carolina native Billie Green will lead the group. Billie has many childhood memories of visiting the park, and regularly assists with Friends of the Smokies hikes.

The hike is a fundraiser for Trails Forever, a partnership between Friends of the Smokies and the National Park Service. Trails Forever funds a full-time trail crew to reconstruct and rehabilitate some of the park’s most impacted trails.

Meeting locations for the daylong excursion will be in Asheville, Waynesville, and at the trailhead. To learn more or register for any Classic Hike visit Hike.FriendsOfTheSmokies.org. Individual hikes are $20 for current Friends of the Smokies members and $35 for new and renewing members.
