Chelsea Lynn La Bate (Ten Cent Poetry), Jason DiCristafaro and Amanda Horton are joining forces to provide a round table for songwriters beginning January 27, 2014. Chelsea Lynn has been offering songwriting courses in the Asheville area at Jubilee and in her private, downtown studio. “We have a cornucopia of writing courses and dozens of outlets for learning to play instruments, but there is no hub for songwriters.” Jason DeCristofaro, a published composer and faculty at Brevard College, will introduce melodic, harmonic and rhythmic concepts which singer-songwriters can apply to their own creative process. Amanda Horton will be a visiting teacher and bring her vocal technique to the course every other week.

We provide a round table for songwriters and singers of all levels to bring in their songs, be inspired, informed and pushed to draft, finish and perform new songs. It’s an incredible opportunity to commune with songwriters, write together, and receive encouragement and feedback.

The course will include an introduction to vocal technique, with focus on breathing exercises, releasing tension and healthy production, body and breath awareness while playing an instrument and developing consistency of tone throughout one’s range. Participants will have group voice class as well as perform their work for each other in a master class setting with feedback related to these concepts.

The course will also feature composition and music theory for songwriters. Jason DeCristofaro, a published composer and faculty at Brevard College, will introduce melodic, harmonic and rhythmic concepts which singer-songwriters can apply to their own creative process. Chord progressions, transposition, voice leading, compositional techniques, and rhythmic independence exercises will be discussed and practiced in individual and group exercises.

Chelsea Lynn La Bate is an award winning songwriter and has toured all over the world with her songs. She introduces tools like refining lyrics, building strong choruses, crafting hooks, broadening metaphor, and gives a songwriting prompt each week with the expectation of workshopping your song the following week!

Vocalist, Amanda Horton has been lauded by Classical Voice of North Carolina as a “beautiful, rich soprano” of “great color and vocal expressiveness”, capable of “quiet passion and simplicity” as well as “joy and power” (cvnc.org). She will be a visiting teacher and bring her vocal technique to the course every other week.
