Special concerts on Earth Day and beyond at UNC Asheville

An Earth Day performance of Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia will headline a series of concerts and events presented by UNC Asheville’s Department of Music in late April and early May.

April 19 – Jonathan Keats Presents a Concert of Copernican Music – Using instruments – many of them built at UNC Asheville – that generate gamma rays, gravitational waves, and vibrations across the physical spectrum, the university’s spring Black Mountain College Legacy Fellow Jonathon Keats will present original compositions by himself, students and faculty, and altered classics. 9 p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium. Free.

April 20 – Listening Session: Jonathon Keats and the UNC Asheville Copernican Orchestra – This discussion of Keats’ collaboration with UNC Asheville students and faculty to create “universal” music, will feature Keats and two members of UNC Asheville’s music faculty – Paddison Distinguished Professor Wayne Kirby and Associate Professor Bill Bares. 7 p.m. at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, 56 Broadway, Asheville. $5 admission; free for students and BMCM+AC members.

April 22 – Earth Day Concert – Missa Gaia Performed by Three Choirs and Musicians – This performance of the Earth Mass, composed by Paul Winter, will feature Frank Southecorvo on sax, and the combined talents of two student choirs and the Reuter Center Singers, together directed by Chuck Taft and Associate Professor Melodie Galloway, who chairs the university’s Music Department. 3 p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium. Free, with 10 donation suggested.

April 29 – Studio 18 and Wind Ensemble Concert – This performance will feature the student vocal group Studio 18, directed by Joanna Best, and the UNC Asheville Wind Ensemble, directed by Fletcher Peacock, the university’s director of instrumental studies. 3 p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium. Free, with $10 donation suggested.

April 30 – Percussion Ensemble Concert – This concert by the UNC Asheville Percussion Ensemble, directed by Matthew Richmond of the faculty, will also feature Rande Sanderbeck, professor of percussion at East Tennessee State University. 7 p.m. in Lipinsky Auditorium. Free, with $10 donation suggested.

May 6 – Jazz and Contemporary Ensembles at The Mothlight – Many UNC Asheville student ensembles, including the Large Jazz Ensemble, the X-tet, the Cal Tjader Ensemble, the Bluegrass Ensemble and more, will perform. 2:30-6:30 p.m. at The Mothlight, 701 Haywood Rd., Asheville.
