State political tremors continue; Myrick steps down, Blue may step up

Nine-term Congresswoman Sue Myrick of Mecklenburg County has announced that she is stepping down and will not run in the upcoming election. Her position is considered a “safe seat” Republican stronghold, and Mecklenburg County Commissioner Jim Pendergraph is expected to run for the Republican nomination with Myrick’s blessing. In the Democratic aisles, state Sen. Dan Blue of Raleigh has announced that he is seriously considering a run for the Democratic nomination for governor, joining several other candidates who have already thrown their hats in the race — including Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton, state Rep. William Faison, and former Congressman Bob Etheridge.
