Suspicious package explodes at Hendersonville UPS

Update with additional information from the City of Hendersonville at 3:16 p.m. on March 27:

Shortly after 11 a.m. on March 27, two males walked into the UPS store on Spartanburg Highway in Hendersonville, NC. Following an exchange with UPS associates, one of the individuals set down an unknown object that he physically activated that dispersed an unknown, small amount of white powder. The building was evacuated, and police and fire personnel responded to the scene. No one was hurt during the encounter.

NC Hazardous Materials Regional Response Team 6 is investigating to determine the makeup of the powder. Other agencies assisting with the response include the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, Hendersonville Fire Department, Asheville Fire Department, and federal agencies.

The Hendersonville Police Department is currently investigating the incident and seeking the identities of the two persons of interest featured in the surveillance photos. Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Malinda Durner with the Hendersonville Police Department at (828) 697-3046. The public may also submit anonymous tips through the Hendersonville Police Department app which can be downloaded in the Apple App Store for iOS devices or Google Play for Android devices.
