“Take Two” jazz at the White Horse, Dec. 7

PRESS RELEASE:

“Take Two: Jazz Duets at the White Horse Black Mountain” is now closing out its second full year of outstanding music!

“Take Two” is unique in putting WNC’s A-list jazz musicians out front, alone, with just piano accompaniment, spotlighting each individual’s artistry. This year’s roster was full of talented area musicians (one different instrument each month). Holding this series on Mondays has sent the message: “it’s all about the music,” which we are confident you will find phenomenal. We have been recording performances and will release them as a series patterned after Concord’s “Live at Maybeck” piano series.

A new roster of Asheville’s finest will be announced in January 2016. On behalf of the White Horse and all the musicians who will play the series, thank you sincerely for supporting the arts in our WNC community. As long as you keep supporting live music, the quality of our musical offerings will continue to rise!

Well, well, the fall semester is over, it’s the last Take Two of the year and I’m happy and honored to invite my colleague Dr. Brian Felix to the White Horse to play some keyboard duets with me. A native of New Jersey with an extensive resume that includes studies with Kenny Barron at Rutgers and jam band experience on the road with the fabled “OM” trio, Brian’s keyboard skills are unmatched in this area and we’re lucky to have him at UNCA. People around town already know Brian as a solid funkateer with a wicked left hand and a knack for slow-building solos. Selfishly, what I appreciate most about Brian’s musicianship is how well his very personal approach to composition and playing meshes with my own. Call it five years of professional close quarters in the making. We’ll hit all styles this Monday, from samba to funk to pop, Stevie Wonder, Beatles, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and a mountain of Brian’s original compositions that are super-fun for two to play because they fit well on the keyboard. Hope you’ll make the trip out to the White Horse for this special occasion, and thanks to Bob Hinkle and to all who have supported this unique concert series for the past two years!
