Press release from Asheville Community Theatre:
God’s Favorite is both one of Neil Simon’s funniest and most serious plays. God’s Favorite is scheduled for three matinee performances by The Autumn Players of Asheville Community Theatre (ACT): Friday and Saturday August 31 & September 1 in 35below at ACT and Sunday September 2 at UNCA’s Reuter Center. Curtain is at 2:30 for all three performances. All tickets are $7.00 and are available online at www.ashevilletheatre.org. Any remaining tickets will be sold (cash only) at the door beginning at 2:00 pm prior to each performance.
Auditions for God’s Favorite will take place from 10:30 to 2:30 at ACT/35below on Tuesday, August 14 and are open to the community. Scripts are available at the ACT box office for review. Rehearsals are at the same time and place on August 16, 21, 23, 28 and 30.
God’s Favorite is fundamentally the Book of Job story played (mostly?) for laughs. Simon’s Job is Joe Benjamin, a God-fearing tycoon with a Long Island mansion, a prodigal son and two kooky twins, a long-suffering spouse and two servants who watch events unfold. The series of unfortunate events is set in motion by a most quirky individual named Sidney Lipton.
The show is directed by Jim Reid. He is a former Chairperson of the Autumn Players and has directed several Reader’s Theater productions most recently The Young Man From Atlanta.
The Autumn Players is ACT’s volunteer outreach group consisting of over 100 seasoned actors, writers, and educators dedicated to taking theatre into the community. Since 1992 the company has provided entertainment, enrichment, and instruction for thousands of students, seniors, and in-betweens at venues within an hour or more from Asheville.
