While most Beatles songs are in 4/4 time, their songs in triple meter will be the focus when pianist and Assistant Professor of Music Brian Felix offers a guided listening session as the next installment the UNC Asheville Department of Music’s new lecture series. The Beatles in 3: A Guided Listening Session will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium.
“Unlike most of their contemporaries, the Beatles incorporated triple meter – 3/4, 6/8 and 12/8 into a relatively substantial number of their tunes. By looking at this body of tunes we can gain insights into the band’s compositional process, musical output and place in 1960s musical culture,” said Felix, who has directed UNC Asheville student ensembles performing Beatles music. The Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever, which incorporates meter changes, has also provided a creative platform for Felix, who has rearranged, performed and recorded the song for solo piano (soundcloud.com/felixbrian).
The music lecture series at UNC Asheville will conclude for the fall semester at 7 p.m. on Nov. 22 when Christine Boone, UNC Asheville assistant professor of music, presents Gendered Power Relationships in Mashups, a look into how certain mashup tracks, placing men and women into surprising “conversations,” exemplify complex and shifting gendered power relationships.
The UNC Asheville music lecture series is free and open to everyone, with talks taking place in Lipinsky Hall.
