Drive for Universal Healthcare 4 All and WNC Health Advocates
present “The Healthcare Movie” on March 12 at 7 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 20 Oak St.
The film documents the need for access to quality health care for all
Americans with a system that is similar to Medicare, one of the most successful and popular single-payer systems in the world.
“Single payer is probably the most efficient, and the most just, system we could have,” said Leslie Boyd, president of WNC Health Advocates. “We all pay in and we all are treated the same. Everyone has equal value and people don’t die from being refused the care they need. No one is left out.”
WNC Health Advocates is a health care advocacy, support and education nonprofit based in Asheville and working in memory of Mike Danforth, who died after being denied the care he needed.
Drive for Universal Healthcare is a national organization devoted to educating the public about the importance of universal access to health care. It will hold a national rally in Washington on Aug. 1.
“Health care should not be a luxury,” said Donna Ellington, of DUH. “Other countries see it as a basic human right and so should we.”
Admission to the event is free, although donations are requested to help cover costs. A question-and-answer period follows the film.
