Press Release:

Ed Helms’ makes his bluegrass debut

The actor Ed Helms may have built his career playing comedic characters such as lovable paper-pusher Andy Bernard on The Office and accident-prone dentist Stuart Price in The Hangover franchise. But his lesser-know musical talents are no joke. Together with college buddies Ian Riggs and Jacob Tilove, the Atlanta native has been playing and writing songs for more than twenty years. Now, the three friends—officially known as the Lonesome Trio—are sharing their picking skills with a self-titled debut album. Out on June 16, it features twelve original songs that blend acoustic folk, bluegrass, and a hint of lovelorn country. The trio will also kick off an eight-city tour (including a stop at Bonnaroo) beginning at the Birchmere, in Alexandria, Virginia, this Thursday.

In this video premiere, the group sings “Asheville City Skyline,” a song Helms penned in anticipation of heading to the city to record the album at Echo Mountain studio, where musical heavyweights such as Widespread Panic, Steep Canyon Rangers, and T Bone Burnett have all laid down tracks. “This song is really a story about what I wanted the experience to be,” Helms says, “a little bit of a fantasy. What’s the opposite of going down memory lane? Projection lane? But it wasn’t that far off. And the best part of it was Asheville has no discernible skyline.”
