Asheville Garden Non-Profit Hosts “Thank You” Party At Local School

Asheville, N.C. — The Roots Foundation, in partnership with FEAST, is hosting a “thank you” party and milpa corn harvest celebration at Vance Elementary from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on November 17, marking a year of growing their outdoor garden classroom.

Nate Buchanan, 2nd Grade Teacher: “The thing about the garden is it is enjoyable! I prefer to teach outside & the students really enjoy it as well. It gives them room to spread out and find their own space.”

Kelly Hillier, 3rd Grade Teacher: “When we move outside, the students take on an entirely different attitude. A lot of distractions fall away. They own the lessons and focus on the class.” “Our third grade team is excited by all the possibilities that teaching in the garden provides. We are planning on lessons about water…”

The event is a celebration of all the volunteers who have made the garden possible, with a special shout out to LOWE’S, who just prior to school opening put in more than 250 volunteer hours and $5,000 of materials to finish Phase 2 of the garden build-out.

  • All Vance students, teachers, parents, garden volunteers, and folks from the neighborhood are welcome.
  • The FEAST Garden and Cooking Program at Vance teaches children and families to grow, prepare, and enjoy fruits and vegetables.
  • Corn based foods prepared by Vance Students with corn grown in Vance Peace Garden will be served, including fresh corn tortillas and tacos.
  • Additional snacks and beverages provided by Roots Hummus.
