Experimental theater on dying is birthed in Asheville

On April 19th, Asheville will enter into experimental theatre. This our second Dying to Live Theatre combines mixed media and improvisational theatre with actors from Asheville Playback Theatre and is an outgrowth out of a dozen Death Cafes in Asheville for over a year. From Said the founder of Thirdmessenger “ We saw the power of storytelling in our Death Cafes and how these stories have a transformational quality so we wanted to take them to a deeper level.”  As a community we create our own story on living and dying through our unique sharing. Dying to Live Theatre we believe brings that experience into profound states of a shared humanity in having our stories played back as improvisational theatre accompanied by musicians and a visual Background

On Death Cafe The idea for a “Death Cafe” experience for providing a space to explore through group discussion on death was conceived in 2004 by Swiss sociologist BernardCrettaz Crettaz pictured death cafés — or cafés mortels — as open spaces for people to discuss matters of mortality, harking back to the French salons of the 18th Century.

Dying to Live Theatre is an offering by Asheville’s Third Messenger, A Bridges of Bardo Series of mixed media presentations / Transformances honoring sacredness in the art of being and dying. These series have included Death Cafe, The Before I Die public art project on Biltmore Ave, The Lasting Impressions – a revival of Memento Mori ( a Victorian art form on Dying) – live mixed Media show at Masonic Temple. Third Messenger’s mission “To create a shift in the culture of living and dying by using the arts and entertainment in increasing awareness of death – a way of opening the door of the denial of death in order to help people make the most of their finite lives”.
