Transition Asheville aims to launch local ‘time bank’ to augment monetary exchanges

Transition Asheville, an organization committed to harnessing “the pool of ingenuity, skills and determination in this community” in a bid to mitigate increasingly extractive economies, has scheduled a meeting to discuss the feasibility of Asheville’s first time bank.

The concept, which replaces traditional monetary exchange with a swapping of personal aptitudes, will be explored in-depth by speaker Janet Black. She has participated in time shares outside of Western North Carolina, and aims to aid in furthering the project locally.

“Sometimes called skill sharing, a time bank is a way that people can barter skills that they possess for others that they don’t have,” reads a press release from event organizers. “Just as currency allows people to buy things, a time bank allows you to donate hours of your skill to someone and then use those credits to have someone help you with something that you want. Not only do you get help with projects in exchange for helping someone else, but it is a great way to build community and learn new things.”

Organizers say that collaborative problem solving and fun networking are key goals of the day and of time banking.

The time bank meeting takes place on Monday, March 9, from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church fellowship hall. Attendees are encouraged to come early for a social reception and dessert potluck.
