U.S. Rural Development Secretary will visit MHO homes

From Mountain Housing Opportunities:

Asheville, NC – Patrice H. Kunesh, Deputy Under Secretary, Rural Development, US Department of Agriculture, will visit families who have recently finished building their own homes in the Reems Creek area in Asheville as part of the Mountain Housing Opportunities Self-Help Homeownership program.

The six families participated in the MHO Self-Help Homeownership program over the past year and moved in their new homes this past week.

MHO’s Self-Help Homeownership program provides families and individuals in Buncombe County with low and moderate income an opportunity to achieve the American Dream of homeownership. The program makes owning homes affordable by allowing families to contribute “sweat equity” construction hours to reduce the cost of their homes. A group of 5-8 qualifying households work together as a team to build their homes under the guidance of an MHO supervisor. All of the homes are built simultaneously and no family moves in until ever home is complete.

Self-Help Homeownership Program’s mortgages are arranged through the US Department of Agriculture.
