U.S. Cellular donates $10,000 in Asheville to the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Buncombe County
Company Focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to Boost Youth Initiatives; Local Associates Volunteer With Children From Club to Celebrate
Asheville, N.C. (April 14, 2015) – U.S. Cellular donated $10,000 to The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Buncombe County for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming. This donation is part of U.S. Cellular’s $1.25 million national commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and National 4-H Council.
This commitment will enhance the learning experience for youth and communities by championing K-12 and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) educational programs. The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Buncombe County serve more than 170 youth in Buncombe County, and this focused approach ensures the company is positively impacting the communities where associates work, live and play.
“As a wireless company with national coverage driven by innovative technology, it’s a natural fit we focus on STEM programming as it helps develops our future associate base,” says Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in western North Carolina., “We are excited to engage with our communities through a variety of volunteer opportunities that Boys & Girls Clubs and 4-H Clubs have in big and small cities and rural communities across the country.”
To celebrate these new relationships, U.S. Cellular associates are participating in National Volunteer Month in April with the company’s first ‘Month of Giving’ program. As part of this initiative, the company announced a goal of 30,000 volunteer hours to complete by the end of the year. By collaborating with local Boys & Girls clubs and 4-H Clubs, U.S. Cellular associates will impact communities through a myriad of volunteer efforts including mentorship, club clean-up days and STEM-focused opportunities in April and throughout the year. On Wednesday, April 22 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. U.S. Cellular associates with join children from The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Buncombe County for a neighborhood cleanup in the Klondyke Community starting at 500 Montford Ave. They will be planting flowers and trees as well as picking up trash in the neighborhood in celebration of Earth Day.
“We’re excited U.S. Cellular shares our commitment to helping youth and advancing our education/STEM efforts,” said Brian Guengerich, executive director of The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Buncombe County. “This commitment will have a positive lasting impact on Club youth.”
U.S. Cellular has a longstanding commitment to the community and education. The company has contributed more than $7 million to local elementary and secondary schools since 2009.
