UNC Asheville Named a 2016 Military Friendly® School

From UNC Asheville:

UNC Asheville has been named a 2016 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media, a service-disabled veteran-owned small business, now in its seventh year of publishing Military Friendly® rankings of schools.

“UNC Asheville is an excellent choice for military members because it provides an exceptional Liberal Arts education at a public institution price,” according to the Military Friendly® description of UNC Asheville. “The university’s small size facilitates a sense of community among faculty, staff & students. It also is home to a veteran student organization, the Veterans Alliance, and proactively seeks to support Veterans in their transition into Higher Education.”

“Our focus in the past few years has been to make our campus a place where veterans can really feel at home,” said Stephanie Franklin, UNC Asheville director of transition and parent programs. “We honor our veterans and what they can bring to our campus, and decided the best way to do this is to look to best practices for supporting veteran students to improve the services available to them. We have established a space on campus for our veteran students to meet, study and hang out. The University Veteran Alliance has helped tremendously in the creation of programs and social events that appeal to our veteran student population. I’m also grateful for colleagues across campus, especially within the Registrar’s and Cashier’s Offices, who are dedicated to resolving any G.I. Bill issues in a way that doesn’t disrupt our veterans’ ability to stay enrolled. We are proud to have 111 veteran students who currently receive G.I. Bill benefits and we hope this designation will help encourage more prospective veteran students to attend UNC Asheville.”

The Military Friendly® designation is for one year and results from an impartial calculation of data gathered in surveys, with academic credibility and graduation rates weighted along with career outcomes, support on campus, military student body composition, tuition assistance and more. UNC Asheville gained the Military Friendly® designation in its first year of application.
