United Way joins local letter carriers for Stamp Out Hunger

Press release:

United Way Joins Local Letter Carriers to Collect Food for the Hungry

Food Drive Stocks Shelves of Henderson County Foodbanks

HENDERSONVILLE, NC, MAY 9, 2017 – Across our community and throughout the nation, Letter Carriers will be gathering non-perishable food donations while delivering the mail on Saturday, May 13th as part of the 25th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Postal customers are asked to leave a box or bag of food by their mailboxes that morning. Suggested items include canned soups, meats, fish, vegetables, fruits and juices; or boxed goods like cereal, rice, and pasta.

As the postal carriers return from their routes, volunteers organized by Interfaith Assistance Ministry, The Salvation Army, The Storehouse, and United Way of Henderson County will unload and package the donated food to be distributed to the three Henderson County food banks.

While local and state unemployment rates are showing improvement, hunger continues to be a significant problem in Western North Carolina and in Henderson County. Henderson County’s rate of food insecurity is 13.3%, which equates to 13,800 of our residents who struggle with hunger, many of them children and seniors.

For more information, or if interested in volunteering on May 13th to help Letter Carriers collect food on their routes, please contact United Way at 828-692-1636.
