Press release from the United Way of Henderson County:

On Friday, Aug. 16, more than 500 community volunteers came together to work on 42 service projects at 22 Henderson County schools as part of United Way of Henderson County’s annual Day of Action. Projects included painting walls, cleaning playgrounds, mulching, and many more. In addition to serving at local schools, volunteers donated non-perishable food donations for MANNA’s Packs for Kids and school supply items for Henderson County students in need.

“Day of Action is an incredible example of the way our community comes together to support our schools,” said Denise Cumbee Long, Executive Director of United Way of Henderson County. “We want our children to start the academic year in freshly painted classrooms with the supplies they need, and we want our teachers and school staff to know how much they are appreciated.”

This day of service wouldn’t have been possible without the partnership of Henderson County Public Schools and Pardee UNC Health Care, sponsor of Day of Action. Over 500 volunteers donated 2,200 hours to improve local schools and make the community a better place. Their time and effort equates to a contribution of $53,218 and makes a significant impact.

“Pardee is proud to partner with United Way and Henderson County Public Schools because research has shown that schools that are supported thrive,” stated Jay Kirby, Pardee UNC Health Care President.

“Day of Action represents the very best of what makes our community special,” said Bo Caldwell, Superintendent of Henderson County Public Schools. “Community partners, like United Way and Pardee UNC Health Care, are investing in our most precious resource, our children. The success of our schools and students is the product of this support.”

Schools, teachers and students will benefit from the work that local volunteers accomplished Friday. “We want to thank everyone who came out to help,” said Long. “I hope the volunteers go home knowing they are truly making a difference!”

For those wishing to find ongoing volunteer opportunities, Long suggested visiting www.volunteerhendo.org, United Way’s year-round online volunteer matching program.
