“Fiske Guide” distinguishes Warren Wilson College as 2017 “best buy” — One of 47 institutions across US, UK and Canada
Asheville, N.C. – July 1, 2016 – With “quality academic offerings and affordable cost,” Warren Wilson College is, for the 11th time, a “best buy,” according to the “Fiske Guide to Colleges 2017.” Known as the “top independent voice in college admissions,” the “Fiske Guide” identifies environmental studies, outdoor leadership, global studies, art, creative writing and social work, among others, as top programs at Warren Wilson, a private liberal arts college.
A five out of five-star student quality of life rating along with “a strong international and environmental orientation” place the College in a select class of 47 “best buy” institutions, which includes UNC Chapel Hill, Purdue University and the University of Florida.
“When Edward Fiske created this guide, he gave parents and students a way to sift through an immense amount of collegiate information to find the gems,” said Steve Solnick, president of Warren Wilson College. “The ‘best buy’ list takes the work even further by showcasing the centers of higher learning that provide rigorous and innovative academics at a reasonable price and, in Warren Wilson’s case, a high quality of life combined with dramatically expanded learning opportunities through on-campus work and community engagement.”
Named “the best college guide you can buy” by USA Today, the “Fiske Guide to Colleges” is in its 33rd edition delivering what it calls “an insider’s look at what it’s really like to be a student at the ‘best and most interesting’ schools.” With more than 320 private and public colleges and universities, only 21 public and 26 private are considered “best buys”—six are located in North Carolina.
For incoming students, the “Fiske Guide” identifies Warren Wilson College’s first-year seminar as a course that “lays a foundation for academic success.” Required for all freshmen and transfer students with less than a year in college, the seminar connects undergraduates with an academic adviser who introduces Warren Wilson collegiate life, strategies for learning, problem-solving and research.
Potential students get a feel for Warren Wilson College through “Fiske Guide” interviews with undergraduates. One student said the College’s academics are “collaborative” but not “easy or relaxed.” A junior called the student population “diverse” making it “difficult to stereotype,” and another undergraduate focuses on the campus’ proximity to Asheville because “it has tons to offer.”
The “Fiske Guide to Colleges 2017,” edited by former The New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, is available now and features schools throughout the US, Canada and the UK.

Not surprising that it’s such a “best buy” – the administration is cutting salaries, eliminating ALL retirement, cutting bus line funding and not hiring for almost every open position. Everyone at the college seems to not care. If someone at MountainX actually did their job, they’d be able to break this story.
