Western Women’s Business Center welcomes Tara Brown as interim director

In an era of so much transition, the Western Women’s Business Center is no different, as we say goodbye to our Founding Director, Sharon Oxendine and we welcome Tara Brown as the Interim Director.

Sharon created the vision for the Western Women’s Business Center and led us to launch in 2014. Since then, Sharon grew our program to provide coaching and training to over 4,000 clients and enabled access to capital for over 120 businesses totaling over $10 million, which has supported over 360 jobs in the region. Sharon’s forward-thinking approach and deep partnerships have led the charge in many Western North Carolina entrepreneurial programs, which have greatly impacted the local small business landscape. We are grateful for Sharon’s leadership and service.

With the intention of furthering the goals set out by the WWBC, Tara Brown is leading us forward as Interim Director after serving as Associate Director for the last year. For over a decade, Tara has worked through nonprofits and government to lead community economic development initiatives, from small business development to affordable housing. Looking forward to learning how the WWBC can best serve entrepreneurs of Western North Carolina, Tara welcomes new ideas, partnerships, and community input during this rapidly changing time.

    Sorry, although I sincerely believe Mtn.X to be superior to the Gannett rag that tries to pass as an actual local newspaper ( right up there on the useless scale with the Sinclair garbage dump of a TV station), I feel you really, really need to hire a better copy editor. I did this too many years not feel pained each week.

      Hi Alan, Thanks for your message. As noted above, this post contains a press release from a trusted community organization. Accordingly, it is not an editorial product of Mountain Xpress and it has not been copy edited by our team. We received an email from the Western Women’s Business Center this morning that the release contained an error and we have corrected it in accordance with the organization’s request.

      Certainly we do make mistakes, but we take pride in continuing to invest in multiple rounds of editing, including copy editing, in our weekly edition and online editorial content. Our news bulletins section is a different format that we provide as a service to help community organizations get the word out about news of interest and importance.
