What do North Carolinians consider indecent on TV? Carolina Public Press examines their complaints

In the latest Super Bowl, halftime performer M.I.A. “flipped off America by middle finger,” a North Carolinian complained to the Federal Communications Commission.

The FCC regulates broadcasters and “fields frequent complaints about all kinds of shows and media outlets,” says Jon Elliston, in a report published by Carolina Public Press.

“In the 14 months leading up to the M.I.A. [incident], North Carolinians logged 193 indecency complaints with the FCC, according to documents obtained by Carolina Public Press through the Freedom of Information Act,” says Elliston, former managing editor for Xpress. “The complaints are uniquely revealing. Read together, they offer a sampling of the many and varied ways the state’s media consumers find offense from broadcasts, and the seething gripes they sometimes send in response.”
