WLOS: Group raising funds to preserve Vance Memorial

TV station WLOS reports that an effort is under way to raise money to help preserve the 75-foot tall Vance Memorial in Pack Square in downtown Asheville.

The monument was erected 117 years ago in memory of former governor Zebulon Vance, and the group 26th North Carolina is raising money to preserve the 75 foot tall structure.

Six years ago, a conservator commissioned by the city recommended “high priority” status for preservation. So far about $79,000 as been raised. The group’s goal is to raise about $115,000.
