Women AdvaNCe hosts pre-screening of “RBG” in Asheville

Press release from Women AdvaNCe:

Asheville’s Fine Arts Theatre is joining forces with Women AdvaNCe, a statewide nonpartisan nonprofit, to host a pre-screening of the highly anticipated documentary, “RBG.”

The event, “Women AdvaNCe: RBG and the ERA,” will take place Thursday, May 17, at the Fine Arts Theatre on Biltmore Avenue at 7 pm. Attendees will participate in a panel on the Equal Rights Amendment and learn about local efforts to call on North Carolina lawmakers to ratify the constitutional amendment, passed by Congress in 1972 but still not ratified by the Tar Heel State.

Co-organizer of the event Stephanie Carson, editorial director for Women AdvaNCe, says the documentary profiling Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the ideal catalyst for creating the change the nonprofit is working towards.

“Women in the state are rising up and engaging in the political process more than ever before, and RBG is one of the matches that lit our fire at the beginning of the women’s movement. She is an inspiration of what we can do, and her spunk is contagious,” said Carson.

Women AdvaNCe is partnering with the ERA Alliance North Carolina with a panel discussion on the ERA.

The event is also the launch of the 2018 NC Women’s Summit, which Asheville is hosting at The Collider on November 10.

“Women AdvaNCe is thrilled about all of the possibilities of hosting the 2018 NC Women’s Summit in the western part of our great state. Asheville is an ideal place for this the summit to come to life. The rich cultural, political and social landscape will provide the ideal setting for women from across the state to connect to be informed and engage one another in creating strategic change,” said Naomi Randolph, Women AdvaNCe executive director.

Laura Edwards, founder of Women AdvaNCe, viewed “RBG” at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham last month.

“Once the lights went down and Ruth Bader Ginsburg appeared on the screen, I was taken on a fulfilling and inspiring journey into the illustrious life of the Notorious RGB. Unwittingly assuming the superhero role in her 80s, she has claimed that rightful place as a true women’s rights champion.”

Tickets are $10, and there is an additional opportunity to invest in the work of Women AdvaNCe with a suggested $5 donation. Capacity is extremely limited. More information can be found at www.womenadvancenc.org.
