YMCA of WNC volunteer wins presidential service award

The YMCA of Western North Carolina:

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program has recognized YMCA of WNC volunteer Camryn Gang with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

“I didn’t think of it as volunteering. I love to spend time with children and make them smile. Making them feel welcome and safe at the Y was fun,” Gang said.

The award acknowledges Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of time to serve their communities and their country. The Reuter Family YMCA nominated Gang.

“We are extremely proud of Camryn for receiving this award and for all of the amazing volunteer work she does for our organization,” said Jill Ibbotson, executive director of Reuter Family YMCA.

Gang, 15, volunteered more than 200 hours in the YMCA Youth Development Center during her first year of service, and added another 120 hours the following year. A sophomore at the School of Inquiry and Life Science Academy at Asheville City Schools, Gang is a member of the YMCA of WNC Piranhas Swim Team and her high school swim team.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary Principals (NASSP), recognizes middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.

“The recipients of these awards demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities,” said John Strangfeld, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. “By recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community.”
