Asheville eateries rank among America’s Greenest Restaurants of 2014

Three Asheville food establishments made the top 20 list of America’s Greenest Restaurants of 2014, a ranking compiled annually by culinary website The Daily Meal based on data from the Green Restaurant Association.

The French Broad Chocolate Lounge, Green Sage Coffeehouse & Café and Luella’s Bar-B-Que were ranked seventh, 10th and 19th on the list, respectively, among national notables such as the famous New York vegan restaurant Candle 79 and Rick Bayless’ Frontera Grill & Topolobampo in Chicago.

  1. think critically

How amazing that Luella’s would be considered to be green, when they sell factory-farmed pork, one of the most polluting foods on the market. Have we lost our ability to think critically? Talk about missing the big picture!

Here is a recent Mother Jones article about one aspect of pig factory farming:

And there is the report, “Cesspools of Shame,” put out by the NRDC. It’s old, but not much has changed.

Pig farming has destroyed much of the environment in Eastern NC, but I guess if someone uses groovy new lightbulbs and recycles, we’ll pat them on the back and call them green. Sigh.

  2. think critically

“The single most important thing any of us can do to shrink the environmental footprint of our eating is to cut back on our meat eating—doing so has a bigger impact than eating local or organic.”
