Small Bites

Cook my Valentine: OK, lovers. You really want to make someone swoon this year? Here’s your ticket: Enroll in the Valentine’s chocolate cooking demonstration and class at Blue Ridge Food Ventures in Candler, and learn how to make your sweetie such delectable confections as truffles, chocolate Madeleine cookies, and chocolate-dipped strawberries (which are harder to make than you might think). No experience is necessary to join this class, which will be held Saturday, Feb 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. Blue Ridge Food Ventures is located at the A-B Tech Enka Campus. The cost is $30 a person, or $50 a couple. To register, call Pam Lewis at 687-7234.

My busy Valentine: No time for a cooking class? No worries — A-B Tech’s Culinary Club has done the work already. This year, the team is offering handmade truffles in delectable flavors like caramel, raspberry, double chocolate with cinnamon, and almond. Proceeds will help the college’s Hot Food Team cover their expenses as they journey to the American Culinary Federation regional championships in Savannah, Ga. Orders must be placed by Feb. 7, and the truffles can be picked up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 9 and 10, in the lobby of the Magnolia Building on the A-B Tech Asheville campus. To place an order, e-mail Lee Sokol at lsokol@abtech.edu, or call 254-1921, ext 244.

Brevard’s new grocery: Come April, Brevard residents will have a brand new health-food oriented grocery in their neck of the woods. That’s when the locally owned Poppies Gourmet Farmers Market on Market Street is slated to open. The store will feature fresh meats, Free Trade-certified coffee, local brews, organic local groceries, and a full spread of gourmet food items, including prepared meals, among other items. At the moment, the owners are stocking up not only on inventory but on employees, of which they’ll need more than 40. So any locals with a yen for grocery and food service are encouraged to attend the Poppies job fair this Friday, Feb. 3, from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the Community Room of United Community Bank at Straus Park. For more information, call 884-6393, or visit www.poppiesmarket.com, where job descriptions and employment applications are available.
