Small Bites

West Asheville residents have all screamed for ice cream, and apparently Lucy Crown was listening. Crown and her sister-in-law Marissa Brooks are readying to open Two Spoons Ice Creams at 721 Haywood Road this weekend. “We decided to open Two Spoons because it was the one thing Haywood Road was missing,” Crown explained in an e-mail. The store will offer ice cream, gelato, sorbets, coffee drinks and ice-cream cakes.

Joseph Lewis is still helming the kitchen at 111 S. Main Street in Hendersonville, but the restaurant has changed names and cuisines since Victor Giancola “stepped out” of the venture last December, Lewis’ wife reports. Potenza, which was envisioned as a spin-off of Giancola’s La Caterina Trattoria in Asheville, was reborn under Lewis’ direction last month as Square One Bistro. According to Lindsay Lewis, the eatery specializes in French-American food. It’s open for dinner seven nights a week, and serves brunch on Sundays. For more information, call 698-5598.

Participants in Slow Food Asheville’s “Everyone’s Favorite Food—But Local” event next month can take their pick of cake or pie. Slow-foodies with a sweet tooth are invited to bring cupcakes made with at least one local ingredient to the Sunday, June 22, party at West End Bakery, while pie fans are asked to supply one locally grown or locally produced topping for a pizza crust, which will be provided by West End. The event starts at 5 p.m., and costs $2 to $5 per person (or help clean up and forego the fee). To RSVP, call Cathy at 255-0296.
