Baylee’s: Good news for hockey fans: Baylee’s Steakhouse and Sports Theater, which recently opened in the South Asheville spot vacated by The Original Steakhouse and Sports Theater, is screening NHL games on its 11 super-sized TVs. “Nobody does hockey,” says assistant manager Jamie Aynes. “We’re looking at showing some of the big fights too.”

While Baylee’s dining area is largely unchanged from its Original Steakhouse days, Aynes is quick to point out the kitchen has undergone a complete makeover.

“We have an in-house, full-time chef,” Aynes says. “As much food as we can get fresh, we make fresh. You’ll definitely see a big change in the food.”

According to Aynes, the now-defunct South Florida chain had acquired a reputation for mediocre fare. The folks at Baylee’s are trying to win back sports fans with quality steaks and Sunburst Farms trout.

“It’s more of a fine-dining experience now,” Aynes says. “Our servers are qualified and experienced.”

Baylee’s, 1636 Hendersonville Road, is open at Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight; Friday to Saturday, noon to 1 a.m.; and Sundays, noon to 10 p.m. or, as Aynes says, “whenever the big game ends.” To learn more, call 274-6640.

Waynesville Chili Cookoff: Chili goes well with spaghetti, French fries and, apparently, art: The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department has announced a combo pottery show and chili cook-off, scheduled for Dec. 13 at the Old Armory Recreation Center. West First Wood-Fired Pizza: Hendersonville’s West First, which serves some of the region’s best freshly made pizza dough and pastas, has added a slate of entrees to its dinner menu. The roster of new dishes include bronzed salmon, chicken and shitake Marsala and shrimp Provencale. West First is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 10 p.m. For more information, call 693-1080.
