Goodbye Silver Dollar Restaurant, hello The Asheville Public

The lease has been signed for the Silver Dollar Restaurant property in the River Arts District. Xpress reported on the imminent exchange and the new owners here.

The Asheville Public will open this winter. TAP, a restaurant and family-friendly pub, is a concept by a team of current Asheville locals that include husband and wife team, Mark and Jenny Henegan, executive chef John Daniel “Danny” Schwalje (a graduate of the A-B Tech culinary program) and his wife Dara DeBoer-Shwalje. TAP will focus on locally grown produce, artisan dairies, wild-caught fish and natural, farm-specific meats including heritage breeds, grass-fed beef and pastured pork. The kitchen staff will make their own sausages, hams, bacon and other charcuterie. Prices for small plates will range from $4-$10 and $9-$22 for entrees.

In the Spring of 2012, an outdoor seating terrace will be added to the building. Plans are also in the works for a TAP garden, summer movie nights and flea markets.

From the TAP team press release: “The current term for our kind of food is ‘new local.’ Stylistically, we’re open minded, with a seasonal menu that allows us to not only cook new local cuisine but also exhibit what we’ve learned from across borders and oceans.”

According to the same release, the restaurant will offer a full bar of specialty cocktails mixed with both “unusual and local spirits.” Beer offerings will feature local brews and cask-conditioned beer. The wine list features global selections.

TAP will offer coffee and pastries beginning at 8:30 a.m. with lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. Dinner service is 4:30 until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 4:30 until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. A late-night menu will be available on weekends.

    Hello, gentrification.

Meh. From all accounts I’ve heard, the Silver Dollar dates from an era in Asheville food that has passed. It served it purpose, and the food it served won’t satisfy the city’s tastes today.

And if you’re just utterly, absolutely, must-have-it craving what the Silver Dollar served, there’s always Waffle House.

Didn’t the Silver Dollar have some problems in the past with unsanitary conditions?

Great news. Terrific concept. Welcome to the new exciting River Arts District. we’ll be at your front door come December. I hope I’ve found a new favorite home away from home. Super location.

You’ll never be a success if you are not open for breakfast by 7:30am AT THE LATEST. You missed a party of 12 just the other day at 9:15 am when you informed them to come back at 10:30 when you opened. While we sat in rhe parking lot deciding where to go 4 other cars pulled in as well and all ended up downtown at other morning places for BREAKFAST. Good luck
