On Sunday, Nov. 2, cider makers and cider lovers gathered at the Western North Carolina Farmers Market for an al fresco tasting event. Despite the chilly weather, hundreds of attendees meandered from booth to booth, sampling classics and seasonal flavors by more than a dozen NC-based cideries and several producers from further locales.

Windy Hill Cidery (York, S.C.), who won two double-blue ribbons in the CiderFest competition for their Hoppin’ Johnny and Rusty Gold ciders, kept a steady circle of repeat customers by offering booth visitors one of six cider varieties (each consumed while waiting in line for the next in the sequence) along with a lighting-fast lesson on the nuances of cider-tasting.

Other cider makers in attendance included Blake’s Hard Cider Co., Bold Rock Hard Cider, Bull City Ciderworks, Fishing Creek Hard Cider, McRitchie Winery & Ciderworks, Naked Apple Hard Cider, Noble Hard Cider, Red Clay Ciderworks, Sourwood Brewing Co., Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards, Sidras Bereziartua Sagardoak, Three Sisters Cidery, Urban Orchard and Woodchuck Hard Cider.

Black Mountain Ciderworks, one of three Asheville-area cideries that attended CiderFest, is not mentioned here. Sad.
