Welcome

Dear mountain sports fans:

On behalf of the Mountain Sports Festival Committee, the 2002 sponsors and the hundreds of dedicated volunteers and event hosts, I would like to personally thank you for participating in this year’s festival.

We’re very excited to offer such a diverse selection of events and activities this year. I feel that we truly have something for everyone. Whether you want to roll a kayak, go on a climbing excursion, listen to fantastic live music or watch a top athlete compete in a grueling event, it’s all there for you.

From racing up one of WNC’s most famous road-bike challenges to paddling down the French Broad River to climbing an area landmark to running through the famous Biltmore Estate property to tossing discs on the city’s new disc-golf course, the Mountain Sports Festival offers a wealth of possibilities this year — for the athlete and spectator alike.

And don’t forget to check out the Festival Center in downtown Asheville’s City/County Plaza, where you’ll find a host of great vendor and sponsor booths, tons of great music, and countless equipment demonstrations, clinics and workshops. If you have a little extra time, be sure to take a stroll around beautiful downtown Asheville.

Welcome, and enjoy the Mountain Sports Festival — and all the beauty Asheville has to offer. I promise we’ll keep you busy all weekend long!

— Stuart M. Cowles
executive director, Mountain Sports Festival
