Gamera the Giant Monster (Daikaijû Gamera)

Movie Information

In Brief: When the AFS showed the original Godzilla last year, I brought a date who called it the worst movie she had ever seen. We are no longer on the best of terms, and needless to say, she will not be invited to our screening of Gamera. While it's not a great film in the classical sense of that designation, Gamera is definitely not without its charms. Shot over a decade after Godzilla and on a fraction of the budget, Gamera's unabashed insanity is enough of a draw in and of itself, and the tonal dissonance underlying its straight-faced presentation of a ridiculous script featuring an utterly absurd monster may well leave audiences transfixed by its very audacity. There's something inherently appealing about the prospect of a giant tortoise spinning through the air and murdering scores of disaffected beatniks with his fire-breath, at least to those of us with the appropriate inclinations.
