Walking through the Kimmel Arena at UNC Asheville this weekend will be like living in a highlight reel of all your favorite movies — or your favorite fanfic. It’s once again time to geek out at Geek Out, the annual popular arts convention that draws fans of science fiction, fantasy, comics, anime and more to express their mutual love of film, art, costuming and fun.

Hosted by local fan association Multiverse, Geek Out expanded this year to host several events throughout the week, including after-hours parties, a burlesque revue, a pub crawl and a trivia night. But the main event is this weekend, as the Sherill Center hosts panels, celebrity guests, specialty vendors and even mock battles in the floor of the arena.

Want to join the fun? The Sherill Center will be home to superheros, stormtroopers, Sailor Soliders, various interpretations of the TARDIS and so much more for one final day.

Geek Out continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Online tickets sales are now closed, but you can still get tickets at the door. Sunday passes are $15. Visit geekout.asheville.com for more information, including the full schedule of after-parties and additional events.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.
