Mountain Xpress and Sherwood’s Music are partnering to showcase local musicians through a series of stripped-down performances for the web. This week Tina Collins and Quetzel Jordan of Tina and Her Pony performed “Telluride.”
Multi-instrumentalist couple Collins and Jordan met and formed Tina and Her Pony in Asheville in 2009 before spending two years living in and being inspired by Taos, New Mexico. As a result, the folk music of Tina and Her Pony draws inspiration from both Appalachia and the high desert, in addition to “bluegrass and old-time melodies that have been sung by generations of women before.”
Cincinnati, Ohio-native Collins released her debut album, Journey Onward, on which “Telluride” appears, in 2009. The album includes guest performances from several musicians, including Melissa Hyman of The Moon and You. Tampa, Florida-native Jordan began playing violin at age eight and later went on the study improvisational cello performance, in addition to mastering many other string instruments. As a duo, Tina and Her Pony released their full-length, self-titled debut in March 2012.
You can connect with Tina and Her Pony at tinaandherpony.bandcamp.com or facebook.com/tinaandherponymusic. Their album Tina and Her Pony and their county EP Walkin’ in the Sleep are also available on the iTunes store. You can catch Tina and Her Pony at The Emerald Lounge on March 27 with The Moon and You.
