Buncombe Law Library closed until April

The Buncombe County Law Library will be closed from now until April, according to County Manager Wanda Greene.

“We have serious space limitations,” Greene said. “When we renovate it, the computers will be in the front of the library, and there will be two offices for lawyers to use in the back.” The facility closed Jan. 5.

The library, located on the 10th floor of the courthouse, is used by lawyers as well as the public. Containing books and online databases, its holdings emphasize N.C. state law and feature an extensive collection of legal decisions, session laws and other materials.

Greene said the county has no intention of closing the library or shelving the collection of print materials permanently, although some law books will be discarded, and others will be kept in storage when the facility reopens.

“The [Buncombe] Bar Association has been a really big help with that,” she said of the winnowing effort. “They’ve helped us know which books to keep, which to store in Pack [Memorial Library] and which we can discard.”
