Campaign Calendar

Plans are underway for a pre-primary forum for Asheville City Council candidates, to be sponsored by the NAACP on Thursday, Oct. 4 (see details below).

Sept. 13: “Coffee Talk with Bill Russell”—an open forum for anyone to talk with City Council candidate Russell—takes place from 3 to 4 p.m. at Atlanta Bread Company on Merrimon Avenue. For information, e-mail billrussell@charter.net or call 242-3615.

Sept. 13: “Meet and Greet” fund-raising event for Bill Russell from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 37 Montford Ave., across from the Chamber of Commerce. E-mail billrussell@charter.net for information or to RSVP.

Sept. 15: Citizens to Re-elect Councilman Brownie Newman is participating in the Asheville Energy Independence Day rally at Weaver Park from 10 to 11 a.m., then from 5 to 7 p.m. will meet at the West End Bakery on Haywood Road to distribute some 2,500 CFL, energy-efficient light bulbs to community residents. Sept. 20 – Oct. 6: One-stop absentee voting; call your Board of Elections for location/information (Buncombe County: 250-4200)—and remember that, effective this year, you may register when you vote during this period.

Oct. 4: Asheville City Council candidate forum sponsored by the NAACP; 6 p.m. at Brown Temple CMA Church, 34 Phifer St.

Oct. 11: Leadership Asheville Forum presents a panel discussion on partisan/nonpartisan elections from 7 to 9 p.m. at UNCA’s Reuter Center; open to the public.

Oct. 15: Black Mountain Aldermen and Mayor Candidates Forum, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, sponsored by Black Mountain News and League of Women Voters.

Oct. 15: Haw Creek Community Association Candidates Forum (Asheville City Council), 7 p.m. at Evergreen Community Charter School, 50 Bell Road in Haw Creek Valley.

Oct. 17: Asheville City Council Candidates Forum, 7 to 9 p.m. at UNCA’s Reuter Center (Chestnut Ridge Room), sponsored by the League of Women Voters, Kids Voting and NCCCR.
