Love on the rocks

There can be few settings more auspicious for finding love than an earth-science museum. There you are, surrounded by eligible singles, not to mention precious and semi-precious stones, pulsing crystals and magnetic ores. Put the power of nature to work for you, friend. What have you got to lose?

Searching for a lover with a heart of gold?: Original Asheville Speed Dating will host a singles mixer at the Colburn Earth Science Museum on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, the group that calls itself Original Asheville Speed Dating will hold a mix-and-mingle event at Colburn Earth Science Museum at Pack Place in Asheville. Singles can come out, nibble on appetizers, sip wine and schmooze with choice representatives of both sexes. Organizer Katherine Morosani expects roughly 100 people to turn up for the event, which takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $15.

“I tell people that it’s just going to be a lot of fun,” says Morosani. “It’s a relaxing chance to meet people. And you don’t have to be there for romance—it’s a great way to make friends.”

In an age of Internet dating, where pixels and emoticons are what passes for intimacy, the value of face-to-face contact has never been greater. “Seventy-five percent of communication is done through body language,” says Morosani. “When you’re dating through Match.com, you don’t know the person who’s on the other end.” In other words, you may think you’ve got a George Clooney on the hook, when in fact there’s a Steve Buscemi on the other end, all rheumy eyes and twitching smile.

What’s more, by mixing with what Morosani calls “self-identified singles,” participants avoid the blunder of hitting on a prospect who’s already got a special someone—either at home or as close as the bar bathroom.
