Introducing: NC Matters — the State Beat

As the 2011-2012 biennium of the North Carolina General Assembly convenes in Raleigh on Jan. 26,  Xpress is unveiling a new online feature designed to help Western North Carolina residents stay in touch with their representatives. This feature — NC Matters: The State Beat — offers a convenient way to contact members of the WNC delegation and to track legislative action. Additionally, it will include a weekly review of bills that are particularly important to WNC residents, along with other pertinent state news. With the state facing a $3.7 billion budget deficit, legislators’ choices could have a direct impact on a number of programs in Asheville, Buncombe County and the surrounding region. So stay tuned at www.mountainx.com/special/ncmatters. You can also follow statewide news on Twitter by searching for the hashtag #ncgov.

While some people use #NCGOV for general NC government stuff on twitter, it will likely increasingly be used for the NC Governor’s election in 2012. A better hashtag for twitter folks to follow to learn about state government stuff may be #NCGA, which is for the NC General Assembly. #NCPOL also covers non-specific NC politics.

Great! This is going to be very helpful.

Also – I agree that #ncga is already in wide usage and that #ncgov will be about the governor’s race.

Impeccable timing; I’ll enjoy it nonetheless. It’ll be great to finally know what’s happening down in Raleigh on a consistent basis.

Thanks, everyone. We sweet-talked Ms. Holder out of retirement for this beat (she’s our former associate editor).

Thanks, too, for the tips about various hashtags. We’ve adjusted the live feed for the http://www.mountainx.com/special/ncmatters page to look for all of those.
