In the running

Election season is underway for Asheville City Council.

So far, a number of contenders have announced that they’ll run: Vice Mayor Esther Manheimer and former Asheville Risk Management Director John Miall will aim for the mayor’s seat (current Mayor Terry Bellamy departs and will take another shot at beating Rep. Patrick McHenry for a seat in Congress).

Meanwhile, current Council member Gordon Smith has announced he will run for his second term, as will fellow member Cecil Bothwell. Retired Coleman CEO Gwen Wisler recently announced that she will run for Council as well.

Four seats are up for grabs, with elections to be held this November. Council elections alternate every two years, so Jan Davis, Chris Pelly and Marc Hunt won’t be up for re-election or departure until 2015. — Margaret Williams
