Black bear takes a tour of downtown Asheville

On Wednesday, May 26, a black bear roamed around downtown Asheville for about 45 minutes, attracting an entourage of onlookers as it wandered across Biltmore Avenue and stopped at the First Presbyterian Church to eat some berries. The Asheville Citizen-Times captured this video of the bear’s stroll.

No, clearly we do not need an anti-bear patrol. We need to refrain from being paranoid about bears and to start appreciating the diversity of life that this wonderful world offers!

The bear may have wondered (although who can say exactly what) but it most certainly wandered across Biltmore Avenue. The Phantom Homophone has struck again!

Pore ole bear! It has obviously led a hard life already, as per chunks of fur missing because of mange or trauma of some kind, perhaps a fight for territory, and it appears to be rather skinny.

We’ll see more and more wildlife coming into town as the animals lose their own habitats because of development and other environmental matters.

That policeman’s summary was really good, a credit for the APD.

What concerns me is what happened to this bear afterwards? Too many times people panic at the sight of a wild animal like this, with fatal consequences for the animal. The easiest and least expensive way for the police and wildlife agencies is lethal removal, which is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. I pray this didn’t happen in this case. It’s just too upsetting to think about.
