Blog Log: The week in local blogging

It was a good week to be a blogger. With everyone forced to move a little slower or even stay at home, checking out local blogs was a gas, gas gas.

The Asheville Janes got the party started with the question many of us are pondering: top it off or fill ‘er up?

Meanwhile, George the Bastard out-zenned the gas lines, and The Ashevillein got this photo of an improvised tanker coming from Georgia.

What the Hell? sucked it up and rode a bike while Petulant Rumblings just stayed home.

1,000 Black Lines knows there’s some things more important than gas, and Flypaper of the Mind has a few ruminations on the hazards of mass transit.

Scrutiny Hooligans had its own take on the Mayor’s press conference, but we’re not sure if Gordon was trying to say “deliveries” or “delirious” (either one works).

What do you do if, like Et in Arcadia ego, you want to debate the gas issue but don’t allow comments on your blog? Well, you can start by pulling a bunch of comments from the Xpress site and responding to them on your own blog. Then take the argument back over to the Blog Log comment section for some good back and forth.

And while many of us wait for things to lighten up, Edgy Mama has this cheerful thought: get used to it.

Thanks for reading through to the end…

We share your inclination to get the whole story. For the past 25 years, Xpress has been committed to in-depth, balanced reporting about the greater Asheville area. We want everyone to have access to our stories. That’s a big part of why we've never charged for the paper or put up a paywall.

We’re pretty sure that you know journalism faces big challenges these days. Advertising no longer pays the whole cost. Media outlets around the country are asking their readers to chip in. Xpress needs help, too. We hope you’ll consider signing up to be a member of Xpress. For as little as $5 a month — the cost of a craft beer or kombucha — you can help keep local journalism strong. It only takes a moment.

Before you comment

The comments section is here to provide a platform for civil dialogue on the issues we face together as a local community. Xpress is committed to offering this platform for all voices, but when the tone of the discussion gets nasty or strays off topic, we believe many people choose not to participate. Xpress editors are determined to moderate comments to ensure a constructive interchange is maintained. All comments judged not to be in keeping with the spirit of civil discourse will be removed and repeat violators will be banned. See here for our terms of service. Thank you for being part of this effort to promote respectful discussion.

  1. Actually, I simply collected all of my comments from MX and AC-T on the subject and compiled them in a blog post for easy access. Neat, huh?

  2. Technically, it isn’t a blog if no comments are allowed…it is simply an online journal of his thoughts and observations on an irregular schedule.

Don’t forget that he kicks people off his mailing list for disagreeing with him.

He mixes a little authortarianism with his “small l” libertarianism.

Other than that, he was correct in his points about Price Gouging, and I have been linking to that article and using it in forums as a reference to cite.

  3. Ooooooh, TP’s got some grudge to hold high, eh?

Blogs don’t have to have comments to be blogs…

“A blog (a contraction of the term “Web log”) is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual [1], with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.” – from the Wikipedia

If I hear another conservative cry “censored”, I’m going to hurl.

  4. Gordon:

As usual,Gordon, you follow the Media Matters template of twisting words and adding words that were never mentioned.

You have manufactured “censorship” out of thin air. I was seconding Postelle’s observation that Tim had retreated to add commentary from a public forum to a “blog” where rebuttal was not allowed onsite….except at his discretion, except here. (Although it is a far more flexible format than these comment threads) He is free to do that, as others are free to observe the move and draw their own conclusions. I was also noting that this was not an isolated case.

  5. 1. I intentionally do not want my weblog to be a conversation pit. It’s just a record of my writings and comments elsewhere; such as forums, blogs, LTE, or public comment. That’s it. Suck it up.

  6. Tim,

In addition to local area bloggers – blogophiles and blog-curious folks are welcome, too – just be sure to bring some cash. It’s a fundraiser for AHOPE, a homeless program/shelter. Minimum suggested donation is $10.

  7. Well, I’m looking forward to tonight’s party, because clearly, I’ve been a bit down. But I also feel that it’s my job as a writer to tell the truth as I see it. I hope we’ve learned this week (we, as in all of us in WNC) that gasoline and our dependence on convenience are false idols.
